Pastoral Care

We recognise that, for the vast majority of children, coming to a large secondary school is a big step. To ensure this transition is a smooth one, and to provide our pupils support throughout their time with us, we provide a pastoral care system to complement our Guidance Programme and the principles in our School Mission Statement.

All pupils join a Tutor Group and will normally remain in this group between years 7 and 11. Sixth Form Tutor Groups include both year 12 and 13 students.

During each year, Tutor Groups have a tutor-base classroom and tutor. Tutor groups assemble each day for a 15 minute session with their tutor before morning break. Each year group has a themed weekly assembly in the theatre.

Our Heads of Year and their assistants focus on the care and development of our children to help them establish a strong foundation and to enjoy all that our school has to offer as they progress.

When pupils first arrive at Archbishop Grimshaw School, much emphasis is given to settling in, recognising and sorting out teething problems and introducing the pupils to the school's routines and expectations. As pupils progress through the school, the close links with form tutors continue, though the kind of pastoral support develops with the changing needs of the pupils. Greater emphasis is given to supporting the pupils through the growing demands of subject choices, public examinations, and, crucially, consideration of further education and careers. Pupils of all ages are encouraged to be ambitious for themselves and to recognise that success and achievement are available to all if they take advantage of the opportunities and support within the school.
